Kasun received a delivery request through the xxx app. He went to the pickup location shown on the app. After he reached the place, he got a phone call from the person who had booked the trip.
The caller said in a worried voice:
“Bro, I have a big emergency. Can you please help me? I need to send money to someone right now. Can you go to the nearest ATM and deposit Rs. 1000 into this account? I will send you the account number now. Once you send the slip, I will give you the money along with a Rs. 200 tip. Please help me!”
Kasun trusted the caller and wanted to help. He went to the ATM, deposited the money, took a photo of the slip, and sent it on WhatsApp.
The WhatsApp message was not even seen by the person who made the request. Kasun tried to call him, but couldn’t get through. Kasun waited for a long time, but the promised payment never came.
Kasun lost Rs. 1000 and later realized it had been a scam.
What Can We Learn?
- Never send money or make payments on behalf of a customer.
- Never send ATM slips or payment details to anyone outside the app.
- If someone says “I’ll pay later” or promises a big tip, it’s probably a trick.
- Only follow instructions given in the taxi app.
- If it feels strange, stop and think. Don’t take the risk.
Tell your driver friends and groups. Many drivers still don’t know these scams are happening. Let’s help each other stay safe and protect our hard-earned money.
