The Mystery Delivery Boy

Cash-on-Delivery (COD) is something most of us in Sri Lanka trust without thinking twice. It feels convenient, you pay when you get the parcel and move on.
But now, this everyday habit is being quietly misused. Scammers are finding ways to turn that “safe moment” into a money trap, using fake delivery calls and QR code payments to trick people into paying for nothing. It is simple, quick, and happening more than people realize.
How This Scam Actually Works
This scam is simple but carefully timed:
- You place or expect a Cash-on-Delivery order
- You receive a call pretending to be from a delivery service
- You are asked to:
- scan a QR code, send as a text message
- make a small payment to “confirm” or “process” delivery
- The payment goes directly to the scammer
- The real delivery may arrive later, revealing the fraud
What People Think vs What Actually Happens
“I ordered something, so this must be my parcel.”
→ Scammers may obtain phone numbers or delivery-related details through data leaks or social media activities.
“This is just a small step to confirm delivery.”
→ Genuine COD deliveries do not require advance payment before you receive the parcel. These “confirmation” requests are fake.
“Scanning a QR code is harmless.”
→ Scanning a QR code can lead to a payment request or fraudulent website. It is not just for checking information.
“I’m just paying a small amount.”
→ Even a small payment goes straight to the scammer and cannot be easily reversed.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never scan QR codes sent unexpectedly by delivery callers
- Never make payments before receiving COD items
- Always verify directly with official courier services
- Take a moment before acting, don’t rush
- Make sure others at home are aware of this scam
If You Are Targeted
- Stop immediately. Do not continue the payment
- Contact your bank as soon as possible
- Save call logs or screenshots
- Report the incident to relevant authorities
Remember
Cash-on-Delivery means pay only after you receive the parcel.
No real delivery service asks for advance digital payment
