Names and places mentioned herein are hypothetical.

One morning, while Lahiru was using his mother’s phone, he saw a message pop up.

At first, Lahiru got excited and almost clicked the link. But then he remembered what his teacher had said at the Hithawathi Teens Hub meeting:
“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Lahiru immediately told his parents about the message and reported it. He had learned how to report scams during one of the Hithawathi Teens Hub sessions.

From that day on, Lahiru made it a habit to warn others about these kinds of scams.
The golden rule he followed was:
“Don’t believe every message. Always check first. Stay safe online!”

Precaution tips:

  • Don’t trust messages from unknown numbers, especially if they promise money or rewards.
  • Always Think before you click. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Use the “Report” option in your app to report suspicious messages. https://www.hithawathi.lk/help-centre/social-media/
  • Learn from trusted sources about scams.
